When many people think of conservation, their thoughts immediately focus on farmers and ranchers who produce much of our food and fiber. The Clark County SWCD realizes, however, that this term is far-reaching. There are individuals who promote and practice conservation without ever setting foot on a farm.

In 2001, we began recognizing not only agricultural producers, but other individuals or groups that have made significant contributions to the conservation of our Natural Resources. Categories of contribution are, in addition to Agriculture, Forestry & Wildlife, Urban, and Public Service.

We would like to congratulate the following Conservationists of the Year:

Agriculture
Paul Higbie - 2002
Mark Burgin - 2001

Forestry and Wildlife
Doug Schindler

Public Service
Southern Indiana Botanical Society - 2002
Lori Krohn - 2001

Urban
Perrin Family Park

Do you know someone deserving of this recognition? We realize that many persons’ efforts go unrecognized simply because we are not in contact with them, or the type of work they do, on a regular basis. Therefore, we are asking for your help in nominating persons. Nomination forms are available here or from the Clark County SWCD office. From forms received during 2008, category winners will be chosen, and will be announced at our Annual Meeting in January 2009.

Indiana's River Friendly Farmer Program is a new statewide initiative that recognizes farmers who protect and enhance Indiana's rivers, lakes and streams.

The River Friendly Farmer (RFF) Program is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Indiana Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture, and the Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources - Division of Soil Conservation, Clean Water Indiana Program, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, and USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service are cooperating in this first-of-its-kind project in the State of Indiana.

The River Friendly Farmer Program has four goals:

  • Recognize and reward farmers who manage their farms in ways that protect Indiana's water resources.
  • Publicize and promote farming practices that improve water quality while maintaining economic viability.
  • Increase awareness of farmer's contributions to resource protection.
  • Demonstrate the sponsors' commitment to conservation of Indiana's natural resources.

To be considered for RFF recognition, a person must meet nine environmentally related criteria relative to his/her farm operation. Nominees complete an application with information on their farming practices. A local committee reviews and selects the River Friendly Farmers.

Anyone may nominate a farmer by obtaining an official nomination form from a program sponsor and sending or delivering it to the farmer. Award recipients will be recognized during Farmer's Day at the Indiana State Fair this summer, and will receive a River Friendly Farmer sign for display on the farmsteads and recognition through news articles highlighting farmers for their stewardship efforts.

Previous winners of this award are:

2006 Davide Lewis
2003 Mark Burgin
2002 Paul Coffman
2001 Bruce Adams
Roger Prather

Nominations forms and instructions are available through the SWCD office or online at www.iaswcd.org/RFFpage.htm.

The Clark County SWCD will be holding its 3rd Annual Photo Contest this year. The contest is open to amateur photographers; youth and adult divisions are offered. Many excellent entries were received last year, making it difficult for the judge to pick that one best shot. We would like to thank all those who entered the contest. Please visit our Photo Contest page to see all the winners. Information on future contests can be found there, or if you prefer, you can be added to our mailing list. Contact the District office at (812) 256-2330, ext. 3, or email melanie.davis@in.nacdnet.net, with your name and address.
