Urban Soil Health

Picture
Indiana recently launched an Urban Soil Health Program with a mission of improving soil health on Indiana’s urban and community small-scale agricultural land. The program is a joint venture of the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) and the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (IASWCD). The program seeks to:

  • Enhance local partnerships to form self-sustaining Working Groups across Indiana to address soil health in urban and small farm settings.
  • Increase the adoption of soil health management systems by urban and small-scale farmers and gardeners in production processes.
  • Provide resources, technical assistance, and education on soil health principles to farmers and gardeners that operate diverse production systems. Co-learn from growers’ expertise and practices, and share experience with a wider audience.

What does this mean for Clark County? The Clark County SWCD in partnership with Purdue Extension (Clark County), Clarksville Parks & Recreation, and NRCS, has formed an Urban Soil Health Working Group – the Clark County SOIL Team (Promoting Sustainability, Outreach, Innovation, & Leadership). If you are a Clark County resident, we can help you get your soil healthy!

SITE VISIT

Soil health starts with you. It starts where you grow food, and where you grow flowers. It starts with how you grow that food and those flowers.

A SOIL Team specialist can visit your small farm operation, or urban home, and talk about conservation practices you can use to improve soil health where you grow.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

It takes ongoing commitment to improve soil health. It’s a journey, and it will take time to figure out the practices that work best in your situation.

Our SOIL Team is here on that journey. We’ll follow-up with you after the site visit to see how things are going and provide additional recommendations and assistance if needed.
